Case: Photography for tourism magazine “Roy”
Roy is a print magazine developed by Nansen & Piccard for the Austrian region Wörthersee–Rosental — a place defined by the contrast between lake and alpine landscapes.
Set between the Alps and the Adriatic — at the intersection of Austria, Slovenia, and Italy — the region offers a uniquely rich backdrop for storytelling. The magazine builds on this diversity, bringing together narratives around local cuisine, architecture, art, and people. Editorially and visually, the publication is structured around two distinct yet connected worlds: the lake (Wörthersee) and the alpine landscape (Rosental).
My role focused on defining the overall visual language and leading the photo productions across the magazine. A key aspect of the project was commissioning original photography rather than relying on existing image libraries. This allowed us to create a body of work that feels authentic, nuanced, and editorial-first.
Working closely with a selection of talented photographers, I developed and guided a visual approach that prioritizes atmosphere, storytelling, and a sense of place over conventional tourism imagery. The intention was to create a publication that reads and feels like an independent magazine — while still serving as a strategic piece of editorial marketing.
The result is a brand publication that balances narrative depth with visual coherence, positioning the region through a more cultural and contemporary lens.
