Christoph Waltz

This cover shoot took place during the pandemic but thankfully not during a lockdown. Still, we had to shoot with a downsized team but at this point even Hollywood stars were used to it and didn’t expect a major array of people. Julia Noni was the commissioned photographer for the production that took place at the Berlin philharmonic.

The cover theme was about new beginnings of a post-pandemic world approaching spring time (the shoot took place in the dead of the winter though, nobody felt spring-y), so we wanted a positive cover vibe despite featuring a Hollywood actor known for its dark, sarcastic humor. Challenge excepted.
We had the idea of incorporating a singing bird, more precisely a bright yellow and gleeful canary bird, on the cover as a symbol for music (see location) and spring (new beginnings).
Problem was, we couldn’t get a canary bird (apparently, they are very sensitive and not the best “props” for photo shoots), so we got a – dove.
We still rolled with it – even if the visual metaphor slightly changed from spring to….peace?! The dove was a real pro – so was Christoph Waltz who didn’t wince once even when the dove pooped on his pants.
